When considering if it is more important to pray or read the Bible, I would say they are equally important. Although most Christians seem to find one or the other difficult to do, both are vital to maintaining a close walk with God.
We live in a fast-paced society where one can feel like they do not have time to spend with the Lord, but the fact is that we all make time for the things that are important to us. I work from home which allows me to open my Bible and read at least a chapter every morning before turning to open my computer. For those who are on the run, audio versions of the Bible make it easy to get God’s Word in your heart as you go about your day.
Although I love uninterrupted one-on-one time with the Lord, if you are going through a busy season, you may also pray as you do your daily tasks. I don’t think this is sustainable long term, but it is better than nothing. Proverbs 3:6 says:
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths. (emphasis mine)
Prayer does not have to be elaborate. You do not have to ask God for anything. In fact, I think the best morning prayers are spent praising Him for who He is and what He has done than presenting a list of what you would like Him to do (although that is a part of prayer too).
Spiritual disciplines are like physical exercise. They are necessary for health, but many people feel like, if they forget to do it every day, they should give up. I beg to differ. Whenever you remember to read or listen to your Bible and to pray, take time to do so right away (if possible). If not, try to hold the thought until you are able. It can take a while for a new habit to begin, but if you persevere, it will become easier to add to your daily schedule, and you will begin to see growth in your walk with God. I hope you will start today!
