This past weekend, I ran book tables at a conference. It had been over a year since I had done that, but since it was a large portion of my life for a number of years, I felt right at home. God has given me the ability to connect with people, and I love doing so. As I ponder the last few days, though, I wonder if I merely reveled in the attention of people seeming to like me or if I succeeded in pointing everyone I met to Jesus.
It’s easy at work or as we go about our days, to be focused on whatever tasks we’re trying to accomplish that we miss what should be the goal of everything we do. If we are striving for money or fame or success (by the world’s standards) or even to be liked, we are missing our purpose. Even Jesus said:
I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. ~John 5:30
We too need to be seeking the will of the Father who sent us.
In the book Hearing God’s Voice, Henry and Richard Blackaby explain that God desires to speak to His children and is most likely doing so. If you don’t hear Him, it may be due to sin in your life, or you may be waiting for God’s will to align with yours.
You may have felt God’s calling on your life years ago and you started down the path He laid out for you. At a point, you may have become weary and turned a different direction, not realizing how far you’ve gotten away from that original call. Maybe you are still doing what He told you to, but you’ve lost sight of why you are doing it. It’s not too late to regroup. I envy those who can take weekend getaways in a cabin somewhere where they can pray and seek God’s face without interruption. Most of us don’t have that readily available to us. But it’s still important to stay in close communication with God, to read His Word, and to listen to what He would speak. Know that you are still doing what God has called you to do with the proper focus and attitude. That is a posture God can bless.
