The Way of Escape

by | Apr 12, 2026 | Uncategorized

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. ~1 Corinthians 10:13

A man was heard to say, “If God wanted me to quit [my addiction], He would take away my desire for it. Since that hasn’t happened, it must be OK.” How easy it would be if God took away every sinful desire and we could walk in perfection but, although I have heard testimonies where that has happened, there are almost always things that God does not miraculously remove from our lives. That does not mean, however, that He condones those things.

I have often thought of this passage in 1 Corinthians and wondered what “the way of escape” is that Paul mentioned. I finally realize that Jesus is that way. More often than not, I imagine that Christians know before they sin or, at the very least while they are sinning, that they are not doing what’s right. If we would discipline ourselves to stop at that moment and turn to Him, we would find that door that leads away from sin to everlasting life.

In his book The Book of Mysteries, Jonathan Cahn says:

Make it your aim not only to avoid the temptation. Locate the door to the temptation and then stay as far away from it as possible.

Just like Christ is the door to avoid temptation, there are also doors that lead to temptation. It’s important to recognize those so that you can better avoid those temptations that especially have a hold on you. In today’s society, people are often deemed “legalistic” if they adhere to a standard. However, there are standards Christians should set for themselves.

  1. I applaud those who hold to a strict standard that says men and women should not put themselves in a situation where temptation can occur. It’s easy for a pastor or a counselor to think they are exempt from this rule since they are “counseling,” but how many pastors and counselors have had extramarital affairs? It doesn’t hurt to put up a safeguard, but it could be bad if you don’t.

  2. For those with addictions, it’s a good idea to stay away from places and people that trigger memories or feelings that might lead to a relapse. Although some might be strong enough in their faith to go back and “witness” and no longer be tempted, it would be the rare person who could do that without succumbing.

  3. If your sin is gluttony (which is also an addiction), you most likely need to avoid buffets or other restaurants that especially make it hard for you to control your appetite.

I can’t anticipate every sin to know what the door may be, but I encourage you to ask God to show you why you keep falling back into old habits. Be alert to any patterns you may see.

Some sins (anger, envy, etc.) are triggered by things that are unexpected. You will have to ask God to show you how to control these things. And if God convicts you while you are exhibiting a trait that displeases Him, discipline yourself to stop mid-sentence if you need to and repent to the person you are sinning against as well as to God who you are also sinning against.

These things are not easy. I get that. But if you truly want to overcome and live a life that pleases your Savior, I trust these tips will be helpful.

Loving God’s Law

Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. ~Psalm 119:97 I wonder how many Christians can honestly say they love God's law, let alone meditate on it. A love for God's law begins with a love for His Word, yet many struggle to read the Bible, as they...
