Why Are You Here?

by | Feb 28, 2021 | Uncategorized

As a child, my dream was to be a singer. When people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, that is what I would tell them. I don’t remember when this dream subsided, but I know that it lasted throughout my teen years. Although now in my 40s, I still love turning on the Rambos, the Happy Goodmans, the Hinsons, or the Freemans and singing along, pretending I am one of them. So maybe the dream is still there, but as much as I would enjoy the ability to sing on stage with one of my favorite groups, I’ve not felt that is necessarily what God has called me to do.

If I were to summarize the calling that I feel God has placed on my life, I believe it is to encourage the Church to love and good works. I pray for a burden for the lost, but my natural burden is for those who think they are saved, who have a form of godliness but whose hearts are far from Him. I can only imagine the terror they will experience when they stand before God, expecting to hear “Well done” and instead to be told, “Depart from Me. I never knew you!”

My other goal is to constantly remind people to not be afraid to express love to those around them. Way too many Christians are lonely, discouraged, and sometimes even depressed. A kind word can do wonders to lift their spirits.

I doubt that I fully see even yet what God’s purpose is for my life, but I pray to be faithful in what I do know.

So, what is your purpose? Has God placed a burden on your heart that you cannot help but act upon? Are you being faithful to fulfill your calling? Everyone on earth was created for a reason. Some squander their lives, caring nothing about the Christ who died for them and calls them to die as well. But there is a remnant that is willing to say with Isaiah, “Lord, here I am. Send me.”

If you do not yet know what your calling is, I encourage you to seek Almighty God. Not everyone is called to be pastors, evangelists, or overseas missionaries, but if you are God’s child, you are called to live your life for His glory. I will also say that not everyone who is currently preaching or singing is called of God to do so. If you are doing what you do for fame and notoriety, I would question if that is what you are supposed to be doing. Time is short. Let’s not continue to squander that time but instead, let’s strive to fulfill our purposes. If you don’t know already, I encourage you to figure out the answer to, Why are you here? Then go in the strength of the Lord to fulfill your calling.
