Memphis Quartet Show 2019 – Wednesday Evening

Final Updates are made!!

Note: I will be posting a single video highlight for each program again this year and will then update each post with more videos from home next week!

Tonight’s highlight video is from the Dixie Echoes with guest vocalist Josh Garner singing When He Was on the Cross, I Was On His Mind.

Wednesday evening was a very nice kick-off for this annual event, with five quartets performing.

Tribute Quartet with Gus Gaches, Gary Casto, Josh Singletary, and Anthony Davis were the first to come to the stage. I had not seen Gus in the tenor position for this quartet yet and am so glad to have him singing again. From their first song, they had the crowd either singing along or clapping and the crowd responded to both Good News from Jerusalem and the tenor solo on When the Prodigal Comes Home with standing ovations.

Here are a couple of videos:

Jordan’s Bridge was next. Ed O’Neal is still recovering from his accident a couple of months ago and was unable to be present, so this quartet agreed to come and fill the spot on the program where the Dixie Melody Boys would usually appear. This was Jordan’s Bridge first appearance at MQS. With long-time veterans Phil Barker, Dale Shipley, Rick Sheets, and Burman Porter, they performed a number of classic songs including I Wanna Know, What a Lovely Name, Redemption Draweth Nigh, and God Bless the USA.

Here are videos of JB’s performance:

The Diplomats also made their first appearance at MQS. With the retirement of Rita Pearson, this is now an all-male quartet, so they fill that requirement for MQS! It was wonderful to see Bill Lawrence singing along side of tenor Harold Reed, lead Corey Pearson, and baritone Jimmy Pearson and their band Jordan Hamby (guitar, mandolin, banjo), Drew McDowell (drums), and Timmy Stephens (bass). They performed some of my favorites including Let Your Light Shine, When They Ring Those Golden Bells, Hide Thou Me, Scars in the Hands of Jesus, and more.

The Dixie Echoes were next. Randy Shelnut, Stephen Adair, Randy Shelnut, Jr. (Scoot), and Jordan Wilson performed their first song. After that, Randy started talking and it was pretty obvious that he had laryngitis! Since Josh Garner was on-site attending the show, he had been asked to fill in on the lead vocals. I’m not posting additional videos for this artist from this performance other than the highlight above!

Gold City was the final quartet for the evening. With singers Thomas Nalley, Scott Brand, Danny Riley, and Chris West, they performed several songs from their newest CD, Hope For the Journey, and other classic songs. They ended the evening for us with Midnight Cry.

Here is a playlist of all of the videos I’ve posted from Memphis Quartet Show 2019!

Thank you for the great report, Diana. I almost attended this year, especially to hear my all-time favorite quartet–the Classic Melody Boys (not the Dixie Melody Boys) with Mike Franklin, Jonathan Sawrie ,Doug Kramer and Ed O’Neal. I am sorry I was not able to attend, but even sorrier to hear that Ed O’Neal is not doing well. May the God Lord aid the recovery of Ed O’Neal, and may the great Melody Boys with their “classical” line-up be able to perform next year.

Boy is my face red! My humblest apologies to Diane B. and Music Scribe readers! My previous comment contains an egregious error. I certainly KNOW that GERALD WILLIAMS is the long-time, great bass of the classic Melody Boys.
And I do know that Ed O’Neal is the founder and long-time bass of the DIXIE Melody Boys. And if he is not well, as Diane reports, I hope he fully recovers soon.

Please forgive the error of an old and temporarily confused fan!
