The Grass Is Not Always Greener

I believe that the majority of single people long to be married. Most of the single women I know especially wonder why their dreams of “happily ever after” have not come to pass. It is easy to think, What’s wrong with me? when the answer is that God may just have a different plan for your life at this point in time. I have talked with enough married people and seen enough divorces that I also know that marriage is not always everything we dream of. I believe it can be, but it is rare that two people are willing to give up their lives for the benefit of another and, without that, there will be stresses and challenges that you need to be prepared to walk through. Unfortunately, many are not.

Instead of pining for what you don’t have, I would encourage you to ask God to help you to be faithful in the calling that He has placed in your life. If you are married, cherish that man or woman that God has given you. Everyone is difficult to live with at times, but I’m sure there are also blessings in your marriage if you will focus on those. Go back to the reason(s) you fell in love with your spouse and ask yourself if he or she has changed, or if you have just become more critical.

If you are single, learn to be content until God shows you the person that He has for you to serve Him alongside. These are things I pray for daily: faithfulness and contentment. Without those, one cannot please God. He has been so good to me. How He must grieve when I lose sight of my many blessings!

I am sad at the state of marriages today. We live in a society where people think they can have something or someone better; however, I have lived long enough to know that the grass is not always greener somewhere else.
