Concert Review: The Ball Brothers and Legacy Five (Rock Spring, GA)

by | Jul 10, 2017 | Concert Review

During the Memorial Day weekend, I was able to attend several concert events. The last one was at The Ball Brothers’ home church, Peavine Baptist in Rock Spring, Georgia. I think it is always special to see groups at their home church if most or all of the members are actually members of the same church!

I’ve never seen The Ball Brothers have a bad day/night! I love to hear group members Andrew & Daniel Ball, Chad McCloskey, and Matt Davis and to see their joy while they perform. This was the first time I had been to Peavine Baptist and the church’s worship center was really pretty and comfortable. The group started out this Memorial Day weekend with a patriotic medley that had the crowd on its feet. And it just kept getting better with songs from their newest CD, Dynamic, as well as other favorites. Here are a few of their best songs of the evening:

Since this was the Memorial Day weekend, Scott Fowler presented free copies of The Patriot’s Bible to each veteran that attended. Previous concert attendees have been donating to a fund for this purpose and it looked to me like about 50 or more Bibles were handed out. I was able to see this group with Josh Feemster, Scott Fowler, Scott Howard, and Matt Fouch in one of that day’s morning services at First Baptist of Atlanta. (I don’t know when the recording will be broadcast, but if I find out, I’ll add the information to this post later.) It was bittersweet seeing Trey Ivey with the group for the last time before he leaves to pursue more producing/studio ventures. I’ve been a fan of his since he was with the LeFevre Quartet and then The Old Paths, and he has done such a wonderful job with L5. On hand that evening was new pianist, Josh Townsend – whom I was also a big fan of during his stays with The Old Paths and then LeFevre Quartet, interestingly enough! Here are several highlights of the evening for L5:

And the finale with both groups – Champion of Love

It’s been years since I’ve seen the Ball Brothers in concert. I’m thinking the last time I saw them they were still singing as a trio. If only they’d come to the Northern Virginia area more often. On a side note, is there a quartet on the road today who has tighter harmony than these guys? I think it’s interesting how some groups focus a lot on the tight harmonies, while others are like the Kingsmen of years gone by – “three chords and a cloud of dust”.
