Memphis Quartet Show 2017 – Wednesday Evening

Memphis Quartet Show 2017 has officially begun! Tonight’s concert was an excellent start with the four groups that appeared. The Hopper Brothers 2.0 quartet was listed on the schedule, but they weren’t at the show tonight. Each group sang about a 25- or 30-minute set and then a 2-3 song set after the intermission. Here’s a brief recap of the evening.   (On a somewhat sad note, I’m sorry but I’m giving up on the wi-fi at the hotel for uploading my large video files.   I’ll add videos to my MQS posts after I can get home and upload them.)

Freedom Quartet – Members are tenor John Rulapaugh, lead Dale Shipley, baritone Scott Mullins, and bass Burman Porter. Scott has now been with the group for a year and the group has a very solid blend. They had an excellent performance tonight.

Blackwood Brothers – Members are tenor Wayne Little, baritone Billy Blackwood, and bass Butch Owens. Jimmy Blackwood, former lead singer/owner, started the set with the group and the crowd was really delighted to see him! Michael Helwig, who has stepped down from traveling now, also made a special appearance and sang two songs with them. He got a hardy standing ovation of love from the audience. To finish their first and second sets, Bryan Hutson filled in on lead. It was great to see him since his departure several months ago from Soul’d Out Quartet. Here is a video with Jimmy – It Is No Secret What God Can Do

(Note: When I post only one or two videos for a group, it is usually because I have previously posted the other songs they sang in the program or something happened with the camera that makes one or more of the videos not of the quality that I would prefer to share. It should not be considered as a negative reflection on the quality of the particular performance!)

Mark Trammell Quartet – Members are tenor Blake Buffin, lead Nick Trammell, baritone Mark Trammell, and bass Randy Byrd. Their great sets included some new songs from their latest CD, “Full Sail,” as well as older songs and Mark even sang Oh, Holy Night by request!    (I will post videos when I get permission!)

Dixie Echoes – Members are tenor Stephan Adair, lead Randy Shelnut, baritone Scoot Shelnut (Randy, Jr.), and bass Mark Cates. Mark sang with the group previously and I’m so glad that he’s back. This lineup is the best I’ve heard from them and the songs they sang from their new “Can’t Hardly Wait” CD were superb!

In fact, the group even had a “release party” for the CD in the exhibit area before the concert!

I have decided to establish a new award that I will be listing each day of the MQS this year. I’m calling it the “Knocked My Socks Off” award and tonight it goes to the Dixie Echoes!
