Reading or Skimming?

by | May 24, 2020 | Uncategorized

Are there portions of the Bible that you skip over every time you come to it? Or maybe you read it out of duty but mostly skim since you know that portion isn’t going to speak to you anyway and you would rather not waste your time going over it. I confess there are books and passages that I have felt this way about.

I am currently reading through Ezekiel, and I have caught myself again reading but not really comprehending. This morning when I was about to move on, I made myself read it again … slowly. I was amazed at how a chapter that seemed to make no sense began to paint a picture before my eyes. I finally saw what Ezekiel was asked to do, the significance of the action, and the frustration God had toward “a rebellious people.”

Everything is in the Bible for a reason. The Old Testament is history. We can learn a lot from those who have gone before us. Whether it’s Numbers, Ezekiel, Song of Solomon, or whatever book you have a hard time getting through, I challenge you to slow down and pay special attention to the words on those pages. Bible reading is not supposed to be boring. If it is, then you are not grasping what God desires to show you in the text of His Word. Ask Him to open your eyes anew and make it come alive to you. I’m thankful that He is doing that for me.
