New Music Reviews: Mid-November Releases

HighRoad is an all-female group consisting of Sarah Davison (vocals and piano), Kristen Bearfield (mandolin, guitar, banjo, and vocals), Kinsey Rose (guitar and vocals), and Lauren Conklin (fiddle). Their new epynonomous recording is produced by Ben Isaacs.

Pros: “Nothing At All” (Sarah Davison, Michael Farren, Tony Wood) grabbed my attention immediately with interesting chord progressions and a sizzling piano solo. “Snake River Reel” displays HighRoad’s collective skills as musicians. “God Of Second Chances” (Kenna West, Sarah Davison, Kinsey Rose) is another highlight. I enjoyed HighRoad’s version of the classic “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” as well.

The entire recording is excellent. Even the cover art is exceptional.

Cons: It didn’t bother me, but other fans may feel the inclusion of “Two Coats” is a con due to the fact that HighRoad has released the song twice on previous recordings.

Countryside by Jonathan White is a collection of 16 cover songs. You should recognize most of these if you follow Country music as well as Southern Gospel, particularly artists like Trace Adkins and Josh Turner.

Pros: The production quality is decent, and White’s vocals should translate well to fans of male country singers.

Cons: White’s arrangements make little effort to surprise you.

Rating: 3 Stars (scale of 1-5 Stars)
