The Originals: What A Difference You’ve Made (In My Life)

by | Jan 29, 2018 | History

Ronnie Milsap recorded “What A Difference You’ve Made In My Life” in April 1977. The song was included on his album It Was Almost Like A Song, and became the second single released from that album in November 1977. Eventually, it reached the number one position on Billboard magazine’s “Hot Country Singles” chart. In 2009, Milsap re-recorded “What A Difference You’ve Made In My Life” for his Gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

Milsap was not the first person to record “What A Difference You’ve Made In My Life.” In 1976, a 16-year-old Amy Grant recorded the song, and it was subsequently included on her self-titled debut album released in February 1977. On Grant’s album, the song is designated by a shorter title, “What A Difference You’ve Made.” Check it out.

Despite the obvious inspirational overtones of the lyric and the overall popularity of Milsap’s hit version, very few Christian artists have covered “What A Difference You’ve Made (In My Life).” Pop and Christian icon B J Thomas recorded the song in 1979. The Thrasher Brothers included it on their 1978 live album, but I’m not aware of any others who might now be labeled Southern Gospel.
