CD Review: Cheri Taylor – Sing Hallelujah

by | Dec 28, 2017 | CD Reviews, Reviews

In this, the final week of 2017, I received a couple of CDs just in time to get them reviewed in the same year they were released. (Come back tomorrow for my review of the latest by The Ferguson Family.)

Cheri Taylor is a soloist based in Santa Claus, Indiana. Sing Hallelujah features a mixture of familiar songs and a few newer tunes.

The production quality on this CD is pretty good and the musicians are mostly A-listers. The packaging is bare bones, and there’s at least at least one typographical error in the liner notes (“mandelin”).

“Trumpet Of Jesus,” which kicks off the CD, does not rise to the level of the Imperials version Taylor is attempting to approximate. The trumpet sound played on a keyboard sounds almost comical. Taylor shines more on slower paced songs like “God’s Great Love,” and the highlight of the CD is the understated “In The Palm Of Your Hand.” The upbeat “Testify” (not the Talleys song), is being pushed to radio as her first single.

Sing Hallelujah would be better if the song selection played more to Taylor’s vocal strengths. The roaring rockabilly take on “Victory In Jesus” is out of character, for example, but it does have a fun Gordon Mote piano solo going for it.

On a positive note, Taylor has a rather pleasant, mature vocal tone. While her vibrato can be occasionally distracting, she stays in a comfortable range that’s very easy on the ears. My rating for Sing Hallelujah is 3 Stars.
