Singing News – September 1970

by | Sep 18, 2017 | History, Singing News

What was going on 47 years ago in Gospel Music?

Here’s a snapshot from the September 1970 issue of The Singing News.

  • A front-page article announced that concert promoters J G Whitfield, Lloyd Orrell, and W B Nowlin were uniting under the Skylite Talent banner. Together, it was estimated these men accounted for 75 percent of all gospel concerts nationwide.
  • Coy Cook announced his new group would be called “Coy Cook And The Senators.”
  • In July, the Florida Boys had taken part in a Branson, Missouri show called Shepherd Of The Hills. Les Beasley’s character was shot in each performance, and he had to roll off of a building with only a couple of inches of sawdust to cushion his fall!
  • Janice Cain’s column noted that when the Florida Boys first arrived in Branson, the Stamps were completing a run at the same show. The Florida Boys put on hillbilly costumes and pretended to shoot up the place, frightening the Stamps who thought it was real.
  • Janice Cain’s column mentioned that Jim Hamill would no longer travel with the Rebels, but would continue to manage the group “from his easy chair.”
  • Cain’s column also noted that soprano/pianist Linda Robinson (now Sholar) had “lost her job” with the Speer Family to former Downings member Sue Chenault (now Sue Dodge). Robinson planned to relocate to Terre Haute, Indiana to work at Indiana State University and also work on completing her Master’s degree.
  • Meanwhile, the opening in the Downings had been filled by 18-year-old Joy Dyson (now Gardner). The Downings had also hired a 15-year-old guitar player, Don Breland.
  • Sandra Blackwood’s “Ramblin'” column reported that while Dwayne Friend was busy delivering a sermon on the Ten Commandments with special emphasis placed on “Thou shalt not steal,” someone broke into the church where he was preaching and stole some of his guitars!

The Kitchen Kapers section featured Mom Klaudt’s recipe for Indian Bread. Try it for yourself!

The magazine also reported that the Klaudts were celebrating their 40th year singing Gospel music.

My mother made that Indian Bread from that recipe. It was cut out of the singing news. I have her cookbook with it in it.
