Concert Review: Pre-Easter Sing (Villa Rica, GA)

by | Jun 6, 2017 | Concert Review

Jimmy Pearson and Steve Swafford, the pastor of Fullerville Baptist Church, teamed up again after several years to bring a gospel singing event back to the church’s family life center. This pre-Easter concert featured multiple artists for 2 evenings. I was only able to attend the first night where the lineup included the Robert Vines Trio, Pat Barker, The Kingsmen, and The Diplomats.

Robert Vines Trio –  Robert used to live in the west Georgia area and had a male trio that I had seen perform a few times.   He is now the pastor at The Ole Country Church in McDonough, Georgia and his church regularly hosts southern gospel groups.   At this concert, he was joined by two talented ladies from his church and they sang several selections to start the concert. I will add videos later if I get permission to post them!

Pat Barker – Pat mostly emceed the evening, but he did sing a few for us! The one I want to feature is It’s a Miracle. I really loved this country sound, and I think you may enjoy the video even though the on-stage lighting was not the best at this venue.

The Kingsmen – I was glad to be able to hear the Kingsmen.  They are one of the groups that I don’t get to see very often and I hadn’t seen them since last summer.    Group members are new tenor Joshua Horrell, Bob Sellers, Randy Crawford, and Ray Dean Reese.  I’m enjoying the energy that Josh brings to the group and really enjoyed their set.   They sang quite a variety of their older songs and some from their newest album, They Don’t Know.   Here are videos of the title song from the new album and a classic, Child, Child.

The Diplomats – The members of this mixed group are Jimmy & Rita Pearson, their son Corey, and Alex Utech. This group still has a full band with them and they were terrific – including this feature on I Saw the Light with Michael Lott, Corey Pearson, Daniel Maddox, and Jordan Hamby.  Alex shone on Leaving On My Mind and Corey was fabulous on Nothing Less Than Grace Will Do.

There was a pretty good turnout for this concert, especially for a Thursday evening, so I’m hoping this will mean that many more events will be scheduled in the future.
