Keep on the Firing Line

Keep on the Firing Line

I grew up hearing the song “Keep on the Firing Line,” but it wasn’t until last night, as I listened to the Jim Brady Trio, that I began to really hear the words.

There are many battles that we all must face
If we die of fighting, it is no disgrace
A coward in the service–he will find no place
So keep on the firing line

I have said for years that a Christian doesn’t have the option to give up, but I confess that I get really weary of the battle. Many days, it is tempting to stay in bed or lock myself away from the cares of the world and the darts of the enemy, but that would benefit no one.

I think often we get weary because we lose sight of the goal. It’s easy to surrender to the enemy or to compromise so that he will back off. Brothers and Sisters, that is the worst thing you can do. If you are over the age of 40, there is a good chance that you have lived over half your life already. But even if you’re younger than that, you don’t know what God has in store for you and when your battle will be over. It can feel like an eternity but it’s really not. Eternity is what is waiting ahead if we are faithful to fight the good fight. When the battle rages this week, remind yourself:

When we get to Heaven, Brother, we’ll be glad
Keep on the firing line
We will praise the Savior for the call we had
Keep on the firing line

We may not see it right now but one day we will. In closing, I want to share a verse from one of my favorite hymns:

I want to live above the world
Though satan’s darts at me are hurled
For faith has caught the joyful sound
The song of saints on higher ground

That day will be here before we know it so press on!
