Marketing Oddities: “Let The Glory Come Down”

Last week, I wrote about the apparent end of the Homcoming series of videos and recordings released by Bill Gaither. On that Friday, a new album was released by Gaither Music Group called Let The Glory Come Down, which I mentioned in my post as being somewhat similar to the Homecoming series, but not labeled officially as such.

Today, we take a closer look at what I’m calling a “marketing oddity.”

First off, let’s look at the basis for this project. Let The Glory Come Down appears to have begun as a choral project released by Brentwood Benson arranged by Geron Davis and Bradley Knight (with Bill Gaither credited as a co-creator). These projects typically are designed for large groups, with many different products available in relation (such as rehearsal CD’s, individual sheet music, chord charts, etc.). Also included in projects such as these is a master demo CD or a CD/piano sheet music book preview package. The cover also is fairly generic – it lists the featured artists, but no photos are used (which is also typical for a choral book).

The demo CD for this particular project appears to have been picked up directly by Gaither Music Group for distribution as a regular album release. Since Bill Gaither is credited as a co-creator, it seems that he decided to add the “Bill & Gloria Gaither Present” branding to the project, which makes it look right at home with previous Homecoming releases.

The oddities begin with the album cover, however. At first glance, the retail CD gives the appearance of a live CD, with a group of singers (including the Gaither Vocal Band) pictured on stage together, much like a typical Homecoming concert. In fact, the preview videos on the Capitol Christian Distribution site are of live performances. When you pop in the CD, however, what you have a studio recording, not a live presentation (and in at least one instance, the artist featured in the preview video is not the same artist who sings the song on the album).

To add to the confusion, only 3/5 of the GVB is even included on the project as featured soloists – Wes Hampton and Todd Suttles do not appear anywhere on the project. In addition, there are several other artists who DO appear on the project, but are not pictured or credited on the front cover. The Capitol Christian Distribution product description reads as follows:

Experience the jubilant renditions of some of the most popular Gospel music songs performed by the renowned, 500-voice Prestonwood Choir in Dallas along with Bill Gaither, David Phelps, Adam Crabb, Joyce Martin Sanders, Joy Gardner and more of your favorite Gaither HOMECOMING [emphasis theirs] artists. Featuring songs from the latest Gaither choir collection with all-new arrangements from Geron Davis and Bradley Knight, this powerful recording brings to life timeless messages with stirring vocal performances.

It doesn’t come right out and say it’s a Homecoming release, but it seems to go out of its way to say, “These people were on the Homecoming videos, so it’s just like a Homecoming album!”, with known Gaither-associated artists on the cover.

Another oddity is who releases the recording. Brentwood Benson is releasing the choral project (and carries a demo package that includes the CD), which is distributed by Provident/Sony. Gaither Music Group, however, is distributed by Capitol/EMI, who is the company that released the retail CD for the project. In discussing this project with a friend, the general consensus is that the choral project was conceived first (and released first) in conjunction with Bill Gaither, and as part of the deal, Gaither got to release the demo CD under his own banner as a pseudo-Homecoming album.

Has anyone picked up the Brentwood Benson CD preview pack, and if so, is it any different from the retail Gaither version? I just wonder if Gaither’s release is being packaged with Brentwood Benson’s product, thus adding to the revenue, or if a separate version was created specifically for the choral product.

    I have not done a strict A-B comparison of every track, but I’ve checked a few. I haven’t noticed any differences between the two recordings.

    I did wonder if “Worthy The Lamb” featuring Bill Gaither’s solo at the beginning might have been a last-minute addition to the choral product. The cover art of the choral project does not list Bill Gaither as a featured performer, only as one of the co-creators of the product. Also, the other two singers featured on that song (Joseph Habedank and Adam Crabb) are the only two who are featured on more than one song. Also, in the product description on Brentwood/Benson’s website, “Worthy The Lamb” is missing on their list of songs. (They do have it included in the audio samples, though.)
