I like a good joke now and then. But at what point does joking cross the line over into lying? These verses from Proverbs 26 often come to mind for me on April 1. “Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, ‘I was only joking!’” Please don’t mistake my bringing up these verses for criticism. I’m as guilty as anyone when it comes to taking my joking too far. It was more “food for thought”. Feel free to correct me if I strayed too far out of line.

We weren’t anywhere close to throwing any firebrands, arrows or death, so…

I know. And I don’t have a problem with having a little fun/playing a joke now and then. But it seems to me like April Fools Day COULD give a person the license to flat out lie to someone and then say, “Hey, I was only joking!” My bringing in that scripture, as I said, was more food for thought. In the story of the Imperials, there were enough details in there to lead most of us to conclude it was a fictional story. But obviously some readers swallowed the story hook, line and sinker, as they say. Hence the disclaimer on April 2.

Yeah, I even bought some old Terry Blackwood suits and had them altered to fit me. I was booking dates, leased a bus and learned all the words to “Swing Down Sweet Chariot” all for a joke! But I ain’t saying nothing, because Proverbs 26:17 says “Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own.”
