Last Week’s Happenings

    • On Saturday, the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation presented the Bob Hope Entertainment Award of Excellence to the Oak Ridge Boys. It is the highest entertainment award that the military gives.
    • Soprano Melissa Kemper has rejoined the Chuck Wagon Gang replacing the departing Julie Hudson. Kemper previously sang with the Gang from 2001-2006.
    • In a special called meeting last Wednesday, the Pigeon Forge City Commission voted to pave the gravel area at the LeConte Center, adding 427 parking spaces. The bid stipulates that the work must be completed before the National Quartet Convention begins on September 27.
    • Devin McGlamery filled in last week with Karen Peck & New River in the wake of the departure of Jeff Hawes. Ernie Haase & Signature Sound (Devin’s usual gig) was on break.
    • The Dixie Melody Boys announced they have reached a scheduling agreement with the Davis Artist Agency.
    • The Dixie Echoes announced that tenor singer George “Junior” Shelton will be leaving the group after the National Quartet Convention or earlier if a permanent replacement is secured.
    • Les Butler announced he is creating three new radio shows titled Les Butler & Friends. A Bluegrass Gospel format will be heard on Saturday mornings at 11 AM EST on The LifeFM Radio Network. Shows are also planned with the sub-titles “Country Gospel” and “Live, From Nashville.”
    • Sisters sang the National Anthem at Cowboys Stadium yesterday.

    It’s great to see Melissa Kemper back with the Chuck Wagon Gang. She was my favorite soprano for the CWG, since Rose. Hope to see her at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion.

    It’s been a couple of years since I have heard the Dixie Melody Boys. I have a chance to hear them this week. I think I will try to make it if I can. I haven’t heard them since Josh and Aaron have been on board.
