What is Freedom?

Pilate asked the question, “What is truth?” As we were celebrating our Independence Day yesterday, I began to wonder, “What is freedom?” Here in America, we have pretty much defined freedom as the ability to do anything we want to do but, as Christians, we must not go along with our society. We must instead study the Word of God and see what He says.

Galatians 5:13 tells us: “For, brothers, you have been called to liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

Peter says, in 1 Peter 2:16: “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”

I’m sure there are more verses I could quote but these sum it up. Our freedom is not given to us by our government; our freedom is given to us by God. Our country does have laws that we must abide by but only as far as those laws do not contradict God’s laws. It is His law that we should, above all else, follow, and it is summed up in the greatest commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, soul, and strength” and “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” If we do those things, we will have true freedom until the day God grants us the ultimate freedom: life with Him.

When you feel discouraged, don’t despair. Look up. God is still on the throne, and it is Him that we serve.
