A few weeks ago, I launched The Originals series with an article about the very first recording of “Glory Road.” Today, we’re going back to that very same group, The Calvarymen of West Virginia. As a matter of fact, the very same LP that included the original version of “Glory Road” also included the first recording of a song that would eventually be voted Song Of The Year in the Singing News Fan Awards some 30-plus years later.
Conrad Cook wasn’t the only songwriter in The Calvarymen. Squire Parsons was part of the group as well. Here’s the first recording of Squire’s song “Look For Me At Jesus’ Feet.”
As I mentioned in my previous article, the Kingsmen Quartet recorded “Glory Road” on their famous Big And Live LP in 1973. “Look For Me At Jesus’ Feet” also got the Kingsmen treatment on Big And Live.
The Booth Brothers are the group that recorded the song that won the Song Of The Year Fan Award in 2008, though it had been recorded nearly four years before voting started.
Here are a few more groups that have recorded the song over the years:
- Blue Ridge Quartet (1984 Close To The Master)
- Booth Brothers (2004 Pure Southern Gospel; 2009 Live At Oak Tree)
- Brian Free And Assurance (2008 Timeless Hymns And Classics II)
- Dove Brothers (2006 Shout It Out)
- Florida Boys (???? Sing Gospel Hits: Volume V)
- Kingsmen Quartet (1973 Big and Live; 1987 Mississippi Live; 1993 Kingsmen: Live Across America; 1995 20 Favorites By The Kingsmen; 1995 Kingsmen Klassics Vol. 5; 2000 Not Quite As Big, But Just As Live Again; 2002 Honoring The Heritage Volume 1)
- Old Paths (2008 Live In Pigeon Forge)
- Singing Americans (1975 Wanted Live)
- Singing Cookes (1975 Stand By Me Lord)
- Singing Echoes (1973 Come And See Me, In My New Home)
- Songfellows Quartet (2011 Mercy River)
- Soul’d Out Quartet (2004 Walking Worthy)
- Squire Parsons (1980 He Came To Me)
- Squire Parsons And Redeemed (1986 Friends)
I always enjoyed this lineup of the Calvarymen.
