Song Titles: “Jesus Saves,” “Safe Am I” with “He Hideth My Soul,” “Where Could I Go?,” “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” “Constantly Abiding,” “The Lord’s My Shepherd,” “Mansion Over The Hilltop,” “In The Sweet By And By,” “This World Is Not My Home,” “Near The Cross,” and “The Old Rugged Cross”

Analysis In A Nutshell: There’s little to dislike about Daybreak Quartet’s Hymns. It’s in the “four guys and a piano” format with accompaniment duties shared by Greg Howlett and Tim Parton. Arrangements range from ordinary to mildly creative with most parts closely matching what you’d find in a hymnbook. One exception is “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” which features added seconds and sixths to help the harmony rise above plain and predictable. “Near The Cross” sprinkles a few piano phrases from “Christmas Time Is Here” into the mix, which is great, but it might have been more effective to add that accompaniment to a familiar Christmas carol.

There are few, if any, key changes and few turnarounds that last for more than a couple of measures. Still, the vocal blend is pleasing and the Daybreak Quartet sings with excellent diction…very few Southern Gospel singers pronounce the word “pilgrim” correctly. Each arrangement keeps the singers inside their comfortable vocal ranges, and the piano accompaniment for each song is interesting, but not overly intrusive.
