CD Rated: Inspirations (How Great It Is)

Rating: 3 Stars

Label: Horizon Records
Producers: Martin Cook and Jeff Collins

Song Titles: “I Know What Lies Ahead,” “He Sought Me Again,” “The Rose,” “Another Good Chance For God To Move,” “We Are Not Home Yet,” “How Great It Is,” “He’s Still Settin’ My Place,” “I’m Safe,” “Come Spring,” and “Amazing Grace”

Nutshell Analysis: I’m hoping the Perrys will record “The Rose,” written by Perrys members Joseph Habedank and Matthew Holt. It’s a good song that would fit their strengths perfectly…probably my favorite track on this Inspirations CD. If you’re anything like me when a new Inspirations CD is released, though, the first thing you do is scan through to hear which tracks feature Mike Holcomb. “We Are Not Home Yet” is the first cut to feature Holcomb on How Great It Is. This slow paced cut gives him a chance to show his smooth side. Of course, no Inspirations CD would be complete without a rhythmic upbeat Holcomb feature. That track on this CD is “I’m Safe.” Holcomb hammers out some gut gripping low A-flats and gives us a dose of his upper register for contrast. The CD ends with a piercing a cappella version of “Amazing Grace” featuring Archie Watkins. Despite a sometimes clunky approach to track arrangements and Watkins’ pinched vocal tone in the top of his throat which characterizes every harmony segment of every song, this CD earns 3 Stars due to a particularly strong slate of songs.
