CD Rated: Melody Boys Quartet (God’s Christmas)

Artist: Melody Boys Quartet
Title: God’s Christmas
Rating:
3 Stars

Nutshell Analysis: Oh, how the mighty have fallen. When you take away the production quality this group’s recordings had when they were on the Homeland label and the dynamic vocals of those same glory days (Sawrie, Franklin, and Raines), what’s left is a very proper and precise, but not terribly exciting CD. This is a budget CD that may be good for a few extra table sales at concerts, but does little to advance the legacy of this once great group. Gerald Williams sounds as rich and full as ever on cuts like “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem,” “White Christmas,” and “O Holy Night,” and that’s the only reason this CD achieves a rating of 3 Stars rather than 2 1/2.
