CD Rated: Anchormen (Glory Ahead)

Artist: Anchormen
Title: Glory Ahead
Rating:
3 1/2 Stars

Nutshell Analysis: Glory Ahead is the first recording by the Anchormen since the former members of the Anchormen became Driven and the former members of Chapter IV became the Anchormen and then got a new baritone (Robbie Norwood). Still with me? This CD has great arrangements that are a bit too advance for the personnel, or perhaps the vocal recording sessions were rushed. Whatever the reason, the vocal blend just isn’t quite gelling yet for this lineup. The middle parts are solid, but the bass singer routinely goes for notes that are below his comfortable range (“Harmony With Him”) and the tenor’s tone doesn’t quite mesh with the lead and baritone. Fortunately, the song selection is excellent…mostly upbeat and exciting. With some fine tuning in the vocal department, this current version of the Anchormen could turn into a strong contender.
