CD Rated: Jerry Salley (New Songs, Old Friends)

Artist: Jerry Salley
Title: New Songs, Old Friends

4 1/2 Stars

Nutshell Analysis: The 22 guest vocalists and musicians who assist Jerry Salley on New Songs, Old Friends range from Daryl Worley and Vince Gill to Sonya Isaacs and Doyle Lawson. Salley co-wrote all the songs. His version of “John In The Jordan” with additional vocals added by the Oak Ridge Boys has an authentic quality that the rendition by Ernie Haase & Signature Sound lacks. When it comes to “God Did It,” though, the Ruppes’ version tops Salley’s. Of the fourteen tracks on this CD, those two and perhaps two or three more would be specifically classified as Gospel songs (Southern, Country, Bluegrass or otherwise). The rest focus more keenly on everyday life. The quality of this recording goes beyond vocals…musicianship and songwriting quality are also high from start to end…plus there’s a consistent musical theme. New Songs, Old Friends probably comes closer to being “new grass” in style than any other genre.
