CD Review: Crist Family (Every Step)

A Nutshell Review
RATING: 4 Stars

Label: Crossroads Records
Producer: Jeff Collins
Song Titles: “I’ve Come Here To Tell You,” “When The Son Finally Sets,” “Power In The Lord,” “In The Shadow Of The Cross,” “Even So Come Lord Jesus,” “Every Step,” “Along For The Ride,” “Seeking Shelter,” “Fountain Of Living Water,” “All I Ever Need,” and “He Looked Beyond My Faults”

The Crist Family‘s new CD is titled Every Step. “I’ve Come Here To Tell You” gets the project underway with a prominent brass-driven accompaniment. Brass instruments figure into a couple other arrangements as well (“Power In The Lord” and “All I Ever Need”). I’m glad they used real musicians for these parts…many groups would have opted for cheaper synth imitations. I’m not all that crazy about the lyrical hook for “When The Son Finally Sets.” (Maybe it’s because I grew up on a farm and get the image of a setting hen whenever I hear those words.) I really like the a cappella arpeggios that support the first verse of ‘He Looked Beyond My Faults,” which closes out the CD…there’s good singing and good arranging there. The title track (written by Rebecca Peck) is another highlight on this CD.

The Crist Family is stylistically flexible. Whether it’s a basic country style mid-tempo number like “Along For The Ride” or a slow anthem like the title cut, this group sounds confident and professional with a good vocal blend. The team at Crossroads did an excellent job producing the tracks and the song selection on Every Step is very good as well.
